Listening & Speaking
Students will be able to:
•interact with clients and professionals in the tourist industry in common situations •ask questions to find out

•speak with colleagues and other professionals to achieve necessary outcomes to deliver required services
Reading & Writing
Students will be able to:
•understand forms, information documents, rules & regulations and other documents relevant to obligations of
•understand written requests from clients and colleagues
•respond to written requests; draft working documents for colleagues
Students should be at the early stage of level B1 of the CEFR so they can build on existing knowledge and
skills to achieve B1 level by the end of the academic year.
This is a highly practical course, with examples of appropriate speaking and writing, which students will
emulate, perfecting their own abilities by practising and redrafting.
Reading and listening will be approached through authentic texts, such as articles and documents, that are
found in the hospitality and tourism industry.
Students will work in groups and alone to produce written and spoken material, improve versions and
eventually submit these for assessment.

Writing/speaking: role play and job descriptions.
Writing a curriculum vitae (CV); the European model.
Evaluation of some CVs and what to be careful of when writing your own. Job adverts; replies to these.
Speaking: pair work interviewing for job.
Writing: compile own CV.
Giving directions to tourists: listening, then practice with role cards.
Speaking: dialogues giving directions.
Vocabulary: buildings and other features in town and country; prepositions of place.
Situations at hotel, airport, station, museum; welcoming tourists. Dialogues: pair work reading, substituting then
recording own versions. Writing: recording necessary phrases.
