Objectives

1. Understand the concepts and definitions of Cultural Tourism and Patrimonial Tourism.
2. Understand the importance of culture and heritage in the field of Tourism.
3. Know the International Charter of Cultural Tourism and the classifications of cultural heritage.
4. Understand the functioning and management of the actors devaluation and interpretation of Heritage - Interpretation centers, museums, houses-museums.
5. Knowing programs and activities in cultural equipment: publications, interpretation centers, exhibitions, historical events and historical recreation, handicrafts, music, cultural traditions in Portugal from north to south of the country.
6. Understanding cultural diversity in the world
7. Apply knowledge of research and research development by conducting research work taking into account that 2018 is the European year of cultural heritage.

Teaching Metodology

The theoretical-practical expository class, developed on the form of orientation for the study and support of the same, seminars, exercises of knowledge, development of competences based on the use of the library and other sources of knowledge.
It will be explored the methodology of project, individual work of investigation, reflection, brainstorming, conceptual schemes.

Body of Work

1. Art State: concepts and definitions of Cultural Tourism and Patrimonial Tourism. The importance of culture and heritage in the field of Tourism. Natural and cultural heritage, tangible and intangible. Vernacular heritage. Cultural Landscape. Classifications and the importance of classifications for tourism.
2. International Charter of Cultural Tourism
3. Valuation and interpretation of Heritage - Interpretation centers, museums, houses-museums.
4. Programs and activities in cultural facilities: publications, interpretation centers, exhibitions, historical events and historical recreation, handicrafts, music, cultural traditions in Portugal from north to south of the country. Exploration of the senses and experiences through art. Case studies.
5. Cultural Diversity in the World: Crafts, Music, Dance, Cultural Traditions: Cases.
6. 2018: European Year of Cultural Heritage

Weekly Planning

Week 1 to 3. Understand the concepts and definitions of Cultural Tourism and Patrimonial Tourism; Understand the importance of culture and heritage in the field of Tourism.
Week 4. Know the International Charter of Cultural Tourism and the classifications of cultural heritage.
Week 5 and 6. Understand the functioning and management of the actors of valuation and interpretation of Heritage - Interpretation centers, museums, houses-museums.

Week 8. Distribution of tasks related to the final work.
Week 9 to 12. Apply knowledge of research and research development by carrying out a research work taking into account that 2018 is the European year of cultural heritage.
Week 13 to 15. Feedback from the work.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives

The conceptual contents taught around the concepts and definitions will allow us to understand the conceptualization of Cultural Tourism and Patrimonial Tourism, the importance of culture and heritage in the field of Tourism. The exploration and reflection around themes such as the International Charter of Cultural Tourism, the programs and activities in cultural equipment, the cultural diversity in the World, allow to understand operation and management of the actors of valorization and interpretation. Taking into account that 2018 is the European Year of Cultural Heritage, students will be able to develop their research skills around a field-oriented work.
