Objectives

After concluding this course students should be able to:

a) Understand the international business as well as use a specific reasoning for business sciences.
b) Characterize the environment of international businesses.
c) Understand theoretical models in order to analyze international markets and the internalization process.
d) Identify the factors that influence the definition of internationalization strategies .
e) Identify and characterize different modes of entrance in foreign markets.
f) Structure and conceive internationalization plans.

Teaching Metodology

The expository-active method will be used to teach the syllabus, complemented with graphical and schematic analysis and discussion of texts.
A methodology of teaching-learning will also be used, based on two pillars: a) application to case studies; b) team work.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives

Chapter 1 allows the achievement of goals 1 and 2, making possible the understanding of the challenges of international business management and the current world trends of global business.
Chapter 2 reinforces the achievement of goal 2, focusing on the analysis of the international business environment and consequently in different types of economic, political, legal and cultural factors and their impact in the management of international companies.
Chapter 3 is associated to goal 3, providing knowledge of the main theories of internationalization of companies.
Chapter 4 contributes to the attainment of goals 4 and 5, providing fundamental concepts for the understanding of internationalization processes and strategies.
Chapters 5 to 10 contribute to the achievement of objectives 6 and 7, contemplating the choice of target countries (section 5), the different input modes (6-8), the organizational options (section 9) and the insertion into global value chains (ch 10).

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit's objectives

During the lectures, expository-active method will be used to introduce the key concepts related to international business. The discussion in the classroom will provide frequent interaction with students, in order to stimulate critical thinking, the ability to express expert opinions and internalize essential concepts. The analysis and discussion of articles and case studies will stimulate critical discussion and develop students’ capacity to recognize applications of the concepts into concrete and real situations.
